An earthquake in northern Alberta Thursday morning was felt in Fort St. John and Dawson Creek.

According to Earthquakes Canada, the 5.2-magnitude quake was recorded at 8:41 am, north of Grande Cache.

The epicenter, located approximately halfway between Grande Prairie and Grande Cache, was five kilometres deep, the agency says.

Earthquakes Canada’s website reported the quake being possibly felt by residents of Edson, Grande Prairie, Whitecourt, Fort St. John, Taylor, Dawson Creek and Prince George, BC.

The agency states that the suspected cause of the earthquake is from oil and gas activity in the region.

The largest earthquake in Alberta history took place on November 30, 2022. The 5.6 magnitude quake struck 40 kilometres southeast of Peace River.

The quake originated four kilometres underground. Reports of shaking were felt as far as away as Calgary, approximately 700 km from the epicentre.
