CJDC TV News have learned that there has been an arrest in the shooting at a hotel in Dawson Creek on Sunday night.
Sources say that Nolan Schmidt was arrested by police in connection with the shooting at the Mile Zero Hotel that sent one man to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Sources also tell CJDC TV News, that Schmidt is a suspect in the investigation looking into murder of Johnny (Joel) Freeman that same night.
Sources say Freeman was confronted in an apartment in the 1000 block of 102nd Avenue before he was killed.
The North District Major Crime Unit has taken over both cases. As a result, Dawson Creek RCMP cannot talk about the case or confirm any information.
A 20-year-old woman and 16-year-old girl were in the apartment unit at the Mile Zero Hotel at the time of the shooting. CJDC TV News has learned the name of the victim but is choosing not to release it to the public.
So far there is no word on charges may have been laid. A publication ban however is in effect.
In the spring of 2024, Schmidt was arrested on a number of charges, including possession of a weapon and resisting a police officer. A judge released him on bail.
Then in July of 2024, he was arrested for breaching bail conditions. Once again, he was released by a judge.
Schmidt was re-arrested a week later for another breach. This time a letter was written to the judge by a victim on July 30th, begging the judge not to release Schmidt. The judge released him once again, sentencing him to time served.
In December of 2024, Schmidt was found guilty of assault and forcible entry. He was released again for time served.
