On the heels of Environment Canada issuing a snowfall warning for Peace River South, the City of Dawson Creek has re-activated its emergency warming centre.

The Nawican Friendship Centre has opened its doors today to offer a respite from the cold for those in need. The centre, located on 102 Avenue, will be available around the clock until Saturday.

The initiative is being funded in part by the Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.

“This space is here to support those in need during the colder days,” said the city in a social media post.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Peace River South, warning residents and motorists of a low pressure system that’s moving through the B.C. Interior that will bring ‘about’ 10 centimetres of accumulation to parts of the Peace Region.

The weather agency says the heavy snow along Highway 52 near Bearhole Lake Provincial Park should ease by early Thursday morning, but highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots could become challenging to navigate due to the accumulating snow.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance,” says Environment Canada.
