A building at the RV Corner Campsite in Fort St. John was destroyed by fire on Saturday evening.

“When the crews arrived, we had heavy smoke and fire involvement throughout the entire structure,” said Deputy Fire Chief Matt Troiano of the Fort St. John Fire Department.

A total of 22 firefighters from Fort St. John, Taylor, and Charlie Lake were called in to extinguish the blaze that broke out around 7:00 p.m. along Alaska Road North near 86th Street.

“Our crews were able to begin firefighting but quickly realized that it was progressing too far into the building for a limited-staff response,” said Troiano. “We knew that we were going to be there for a while and we needed an abundance of resources to maintain safety and proficiency in our operations.”

Crews remained on the scene for just over three hours to bring the fire under control. An investigation has since determined that the fire is not being deemed suspicious. The RCMP confirmed that prior to the fire, a person had been using the building as a shelter; however, no injuries have been reported.

The building is now considered a complete tear-down. The fire department is currently working with the property owner to arrange for its removal.
