A former candidate who ran for mayor in Dawson Creek in 2022, is facing a hefty fine from Elections BC.
Shaely Wilbur was defeated in a landslide by Darcy Dober. Dober was elected with 1,855 votes while Wilbur received 304.
Now Elections BC says that Wilbur owes $4875 in fines for accepting campaign contributions from businesses.
Wilbur acted as her own financial agent during the campaign. The donations in question were from Western Canadian Properties, WCPG Construction Ltd. and the Dawson Creek Super 8 Motel.
The former three term city councillor was then notified by Elections BC about possible contraventions to the Elections Act.
In a letter sent to Wilbur from the agency, she claimed the donations were from individuals. She was then asked to prove the money came from private bank accounts and not business accounts.
The agency says Wilbur didn’t send the requested documents and stopped responding to the investigator handling her case.
