The City of Fort St. John has provided an update regarding a cyber attack that has disrupted city services since Tuesday.
Mayor Lilia Hansen addressed the situation on social media after the city activated a ‘cyber incident response’ to identify and assess the cause.
“Our cyber security specialists continue to investigate the cause and impacts,” said Hansen in a video posted to the city’s Facebook page.
She assured residents that recreation facilities remain open and City Hall can still accept payments. However, she noted that service capacity remains “extremely limited” at both City Hall and Development Services.
Hansen also emphasized the city’s commitment to providing regular and transparent updates.
City officials told CJDC-TV today that they are taking the situation seriously and are still investigating to determine whether any personal information was breached.
In a notification posted on their website, the city wrote, “Our cyber incident response continues to work on identifying the potential impacts while safeguarding the integrity of our systems.”
On February 25th, shortly after 9:00 a.m., the city announced that their IT team was working to restore services after an outage affected internet, server access, some phone calls, and incoming and outgoing emails.
In a later update, the city indicated that in-person service capacity was “extremely limited” and telephone service was intermittent.
Residents are advised to monitor the city’s website and social media pages for updates and to report any issues by calling (778) 256-0076.
A full list of impacted services and their status is available on the city’s website.
