A grassfire broke out near the elementary school in Wonowon on Thursday. The fire grew to four hectares in size and spread into some nearby trees.

BC Wildfire Service said a crew of three firefighters and a response officer were sent to the scene.

Two structures on Wonowan Subdivision Road caught fire. However, firefighters could only watch, as Wildfire Service personnel are not trained to fight structure fires. All they could do is stand back and prevent the fire from spreading.

The fire is believed to be human caused and is now under control.

A call to School District 60 to inquire about the safety of students has not been returned.
