The RCMP in Hudson’s Hope assisting with information on a cross-border incident of sexual interference involving a minor.
This investigation originated from a case based in the United States. On January 3rd, the RCMP received a report of an Alberta resident communicating online with a 16-year-old girl from Texas.
Corporal Erich Schmidt said that the suspect recently travelled to Texas to engage in sexual activity with the minor. As the suspect was believed to be heading back to Alberta, an investigation revealed that their cellphone location was pinged to the Hudson’s Hope area.
The minor informing Mounties that she tracked the suspect using location features on the social media app Snapchat.
The case file remains with local police in Texas, and there is currently no word on whether the suspect has been apprehended.
Speaking with CJDC-TV, Schmidt is now encouraging residents of Hudson’s Hope to be vigilant and aware of the dangers of online luring.
