An investigation is underway after a fire broke out early this morning at a fast-food restaurant in Fort St. John.

Just after 2:30 a.m., the Fort St. John Fire Department responded to the blaze at ‘Mucho Burrito’, located in a newly-opened plaza off Alaska Road South.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, heavy smoke and flames were seen coming from the establishment.

After gaining entry through the front door, Deputy Fire Chief Matt Troiano described the restaurant as being engulfed in floor-to-ceiling smoke with high heat levels.

Thirteen firefighters battled the blaze, managing to contain it after nearly two hours, preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent restaurants, which include Subway and Triple O’s.

“We were able to eliminate any damage there, so they will be able to function as normal,” said Troiano.

The Mucho Burrito remains closed after sustaining severe damage, with inspectors observed on-site this afternoon.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
