Police were at three separate crime scenes Monday morning after a man was found murdered in an apartment in Dawson Creek.

Details of the case are scarce as the Major Crime Unit from Prince George has taken over the case, meaning Dawson Creek RCMP can’t comment.

Sources tell CJDC TV News that the body of Johnny Joe Freeman was found in an apartment in the 1000 block of 102nd Avenue.

Sources also tell CJDC TV News, Freeman who went by the name Joel, went to the apartment Sunday night to retrieve a family member’s stolen cellphone. It is believed he was shot and killed after confronting an individual.

CJDC has learned the name of the suspect. At this point, we are choosing not to release it or any further details until formal charges have been filed. It is not clear at this point, if the suspect is in police custody.

Freeman had ties to an organized crime group in Dawson Creek. So far, no motive for his murdered has been uncovered.

A block away for the murder scene, police and the Forensic Unit were combing through the Mile Zero Motel.

A source said there was a report of shots fired in downtown Dawson Creek late Sunday night. Police could be seen through the window searching the first and third floor of the motel.

Early Monday morning there was also a heavy police presence on 7th Street. Neighbours told CJDC TV New that officers had the intersection of 7th Street and 92nd Avenue blocked off and were diverting traffic.

A source said officers were looking for a firearm in the area, but CJDC has not been able to independently verify that information.

At this point, it is also not clear if any of the three crimes scenes are connected.
