Northern Health has issued a toxic drug alert for the entire region, warning residents about a dangerous substance being sold under the name “Oxycocet.”

According to the health authority, the round white pill has tested positive for a synthetic opioid known as Isotonitazene or “Nitazene,” which is as toxic—or potentially more toxic—than fentanyl.

Nitazene cannot be detected using fentanyl test strips, according to Northern Health.

Health officials are urging anyone who might use the substance to carry naloxone, a life-saving medication that reverses opioid overdoses. They are also advised against consuming the drug alone to prevent fatal incidents.

The toxic drug alert remains in effect until April 10.

Information on local overdose prevention sites and resources is available on the Northern Health website.
