Scammers impersonating Dawson Creek city staff to collect bill payments

Dawson Creek City Hall (FILE)

The City of Dawson Creek is warning residents to be on the look out for scammers pretending to be city staff.

Officials at City Hall say they have received several reports about fraudsters that are requesting payments on behalf of the city. They are asking residents to pay their bills with gift cards.

The fraudsters use technology to make it look like they’re calling from an official city hall phone number.

Officials say that during tax season the activity may increase - so stay alert. They add that city staff will never ask for payment using gift cards.

If you receive a request via email, check that the address ends with @dawsoncreek.ca. If you’re unsure, reach out to communications@dawsoncreek.ca for help.

If you are unsure about who is on the other end of the phone, hang up and dial 3-1-1, then press #0 to speak with a city staff member.

For safe payment options and property tax info before the July 2, 2024 deadline, visit the city’s website.
