The City of Fort St. John has confirmed data was stolen after a cyber attack infiltrated the city’s systems. The breach, which occurred last Tuesday, has caused a disruption to city services, leaving cyber security experts grappling with the aftermath.
“During the initial stages of the forensic investigation, we have uncovered evidence to suggest that a small subset of our data was taken by the unauthorized third party during the incident,” said the city in an update today.
The third party gained access to part of their network and encrypted data.
The city is now working with authorities to review the findings and determine if any sensitive personal information was stolen. Affected individuals will be notified if necessary. The investigation remains ongoing, with the city emphasizing the need to be ‘sensitive’ around what information is shared.
The priority is to now safeguard data and bring operations back online in a secure and timely manner.
Since the cyber incident response was initiated on February 25th, over 75% of front-facing services have been restored.
The remaining services are expected to be fully operational within the next few days.
