The community centre in Tumbler Ridge will remain closed longer than anticipated due to a significant heating issue.
The District announced the closure on Wednesday.
In a Special Council Meeting held February 5th, Mayor Darryl Krakowka and council approved up to $300,000 in an effort to get the facility operational and open to the public.
The funds, pre-approved from the operating surplus before the adoption of the five-year financial plan, will cover the cost of a new boiler, installation, and heater rentals. However, the cost may be reimbursed if an insurance claim is successful, according to district officials.
Currently, the building has some heat but no hot water due to an irreparable leak in one of it’s three boiler’s heat exchangers.
The centre was initially expected to reopen today, but has been delayed until at least Monday, with the possibility of a further extension.
Scheduled hockey and curling tournaments had to be cancelled as a result, and all those affected by the closure have been notified, according to the district.
The boiler failure impacted all facilities within the community centre, including the daycare, fitness centre, curling rink, swimming pool, and library.
The centre also functioned as a warming centre. In the event of another cold weather alert, the town hall will extend its hours to serve as a backup.
The district has apologized for the inconvenience and thanked the public for their understanding.
Residents are being asked to monitor community notices, the district’s social media pages, and website for updates.
