An explosion at an oil and gas plant in the Peace Region has resulted in one death and injuries to another.
According to the BC Energy Regulator, it happened at the Tourmaline Gundy plant, approximately 150 kilometers north of Fort St. John.
An accident at the site occurred around 6pm Monday. That accident led to a fire which then caused the explosion.
Sources tell CJDC TV New that a pile-driver truck struck a pipeline. That caused an explosion that killed contract worker and also led to a grassfire.
BC Emergency Health Services said they received a call at 6:37 p.m. about an incident on Highway 97 North and Upper Halfway Road near Wonowon.
Four ambulances with primary care paramedics and an advanced care paramedic response unit, responded and met the company’s medivan.
“Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to two patients. One patient was transported to hospital in critical condition. The other patient was transported to hospital in serious condition,” says Paramedic Public Information Officer Brian Twaites.
The Fort St. John RCMP and WorkSafe both confirm an investigation is underway. The BC Energy Regulator has also sent inspectors to the scene.
